During my career I have encountered many entrepreneurs and startup founders who (mistakenly) think of design as the final touch, something that adds flair (or form) to their product after all the hard work is done.
Design does not start with the form, its form is the result. And therefore, design is not the cherry on top: it is the essential flavor in every layer of the product (cake).
When it comes to visual design, it is more than just aesthetics. Especially when you are building a business. Visual design is a powerful tool that communicates your brand’s values, vision, and “personality”. Without adequate visual communication, you risk sending mixed signals to your audience, losing trust and missing out on key opportunities.
Design should be integral from the start. A solid visual identity does not just look good. It attracts and speaks to your ideal customer. It instantly communicates who you are, what you stand for, and why someone should care about your product or service. From logos to website design, every element plays a role in creating a memorable experience. And it is not the first impression. It should be lasting impression that creates bond and deeper relationship with your audience.
If you are in position to integrate a designer into your strategy from day one, do so! Do not wait for the last stage of development process to invest in design and miss the chance to lay down the foundation that could support your entire brand.
Incorporate design as a part of your product’s DNA from the beginning, and it will help build trust, increase conversions, and create an emotional connection with your audience.
